About this cinch

The Mattes removable-cover western cinch is designed to provide excellent comfort and distribute pressure over a wider area of the horse’s sternum.

It is made with 100% genuine sheepskin and stainless-steel cinch buckles. The removable sheepskin cover makes cleaning easier and replacement covers can be purchased separately.

The cinch incorporates Mattes Poly-Flex® technology for effective pressure distribution. Its Soft Edge helps protect against rubbing and chafing while allowing greater freedom of movement around the elbows.

The buckle flap edges are tapered to help prevent pressure ridges. Two central D-rings are included for the attachment of a martingale or other suitable equipment and a rear cinch hobble strap.

Mattes cinches can also be a particularly useful choice with treeless saddles because of their wide pressure-distributing design.

Which cinch shape does my horse need?

Contoured

The Contoured cinch is a versatile shape suitable for many horses. It is shaped away from the elbows to provide additional freedom of movement and is particularly useful where the horse’s conformation or girth groove encourages the cinch to move forwards.

Asymmetric

The Asymmetric cinch is designed for close-coupled horses where there is limited space between the horse’s elbows and the natural girth position. It is cut back more strongly at the front to provide additional elbow clearance.

Crescent

The Crescent cinch is designed for rounder horses, horses with wide-sprung ribs or those with a narrower chest. Its curved shape accommodates the ribcage and helps prevent the cinch and saddle from being drawn forwards.

Athletico

The Athletico cinch is designed for athletic or wedge-shaped horses whose conformation encourages the cinch and saddle to move backwards. Its shape helps the cinch remain in its natural position.

Slimline

The Slimline cinch provides the benefits of the appropriate Mattes shape in a narrower, leather-covered design. It is particularly helpful where the horse has limited space between the elbows and the cinch or where less bulk is required.

Icelandic

The Mattes Icelandic girth is designed specifically for the conformation commonly found in Icelandic horses. Its shape and pressure-distributing construction provide comfort while allowing freedom around the elbows.

Size and options

Please measure your horse carefully before selecting a size. Do not rely solely on the labelled size of an existing cinch, as different manufacturers may measure their products differently.

Mattes cinches are available in a wide selection of sizes, colours and configurations.

Colour advice

If you have a pale-coloured horse, we recommend choosing a lighter sheepskin colour. On occasion, dye from darker sheepskin may transfer when wet.

Some fading of the wool’s surface is also possible. This can be affected by the individual composition of the horse’s sweat and does not necessarily indicate a product fault.

Custom-order delivery

Custom-made to order — estimated delivery 4–8 weeks.

You have 24 hours after placing your order to contact us about any changes or cancellation. After this period, your order will be submitted to Mattes and cannot normally be changed or cancelled.

Please check your chosen size, colours, shape and configuration carefully before ordering.

Returns

Mattes products purchased from our available stock may be returned in accordance with our standard returns policy, provided they are unused, clean and returned in their original condition and packaging.

Custom-made Mattes cinches and girths are manufactured specifically to the customer’s chosen size, colours and configuration. Once the order has been submitted to Mattes, it cannot normally be changed, cancelled or returned because the customer has changed their mind.

If we agree, at our discretion, to accept the return of a correctly supplied, non-faulty custom-made product, a 25% restocking charge will be deducted from the refund.

This does not affect the customer’s statutory rights where an item is faulty, damaged or differs from the confirmed order.
